A lower payment gets your attention. Before switching, find out whether it buys the coverage you meant to compare.
You do not need to become an insurance expert. You need consistent information, a short comparison, and a confirmed transition if you decide to move forward.
Put the quotes on the same footing
Use this worksheet with your current declarations page and the proposed quote:
| Compare | Current policy | Proposed policy |
|---|---|---|
| Policy term and total premium | Fill in | Fill in |
| Drivers and vehicles listed | Fill in | Fill in |
| Liability limits | Fill in | Fill in |
| Collision and comprehensive deductibles | Fill in | Fill in |
| Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage | Fill in | Fill in |
| Rental reimbursement and other selected options | Fill in | Fill in |
| Fees, payment schedule, and discounts | Fill in | Fill in |
Do not compare a 6 month total with a 12 month total or assume the first payment is the regular monthly payment. Ask what the full term will cost under the payment arrangement you intend to use.
A quote is an estimate based on the selected coverage and information provided. Ask what information or underwriting steps remain before treating that estimate as final. Farmers: Insurance quote questions
Mark the differences instead of hiding them
If one quote has a higher deductible or omits an option, write that down. You may still choose it, but make the choice consciously. An unexplained difference is something to resolve with the agent.
Also mention other policies in your household. Ask what a change would mean for any existing discounts or arrangements. Do not assume a lower auto premium automatically lowers your total household insurance cost.
Confirm the transition
If you choose a new policy, obtain confirmation that coverage is in effect before canceling the old one. Check the effective date and time, payment requirements, and proof of insurance. Ask the prior insurer how cancellation and any remaining balance or refund will be handled. TDI recommends avoiding a lapse when changing auto insurance. TDI: Auto insurance guide
Keep the confirmations together. Do not treat stopping a payment as a substitute for a cancellation request.
For a Waco household, the useful result is a policy you understand and a transition you can document. Price matters, but so does knowing exactly what changed.
Your next step: Request an Auto quote and have your current declarations page ready for the comparison conversation.
